★ “Summer’s Over,” Jordana & TV Girl

Let’s start by revealing the inspiration behind this playlist: “Summer’s Over.” This song, and the album it comes from, have been favorites of mine for years. With my move-in date creeping closer, I've been fighting the reality that summer is ending, and this track perfectly captures that bittersweet sentiment. It’s a fitting anthem for anyone who’s reluctant to let go of the warm, carefree days of summer.
★ “Magpie,”  Peach Pit

This track might not completely align with the fall or back-to-school vibe I initially intended, but I promise the rest of the playlist will. Peach Pit’s fourth studio album, dropping this October after a two-year wait, offers the perfect motivation to get through the first semester. “Magpie,” the first release from the new album, stands out with its unique sound—think “Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd mixed with a more rock-oriented beat. It’s an absolute gem and a great way to kick off the season.

★ “Hot Rod,” Dayglow

Nothing says nostalgia quite like Dayglow’s “Hot Rod.” You might not have heard it since 2020, but now is the perfect time to bring it back. There’s something about the retro vibe of this song that screams “first day of school,” making it a must-add to your fall playlist.

★ “We’re Going to Be Friends,” The White Stripes

The lyrics, “Fall is here, hear the yell/Back to school, ring the bell,” perfectly encapsulate why this song made the cut. It’s so on the nose for the back-to-school theme that I couldn’t leave it out. The warm, nostalgic energy of this track is undeniable, making it a staple for this time of year.

★ “There She Goes,” The La’s

This song, forever linked to the opening scene of Gilmore Girls, is quintessentially autumnal. It evokes images of a small, quaint town with trees turning shades of red, orange, and yellow. For me, “There She Goes” will always be the soundtrack to fall, embodying the season’s cozy and reflective mood.

★ “Ribs,” Lorde

“It drives you crazy getting old.” As someone on the brink of their twenties, “Ribs” hits close to home. The start of a new school year is a reminder of how quickly time is passing, and this song is a poignant reflection of that feeling. It’s a perfect choice for those moments when the reality of growing up feels a little too overwhelming.
★ “Just Like Heaven,” The Cure

Let’s lighten the mood with “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure. This gothic rock hit is impossible not to love, with its infectious melody and uplifting vibe. I’ll admit, I borrowed this track from my best friend’s “Faller Baller” playlist, but it’s too fitting for this list to leave out. It’s a joyful reminder that fall isn’t just about introspection—it’s also about celebrating the season’s beauty.

★ “august,” Taylor Swift

Another track that’s right on the nose—“august” is the perfect way to acknowledge that summer is slipping away and September is just around the corner. While I might not be the biggest Taylor Swift fan, her album folklore is an essential listen for this time of year. The melancholic yet hopeful tone of “august” captures the bittersweet transition from summer to fall.

★ “Apple Cider,” beabadoobee

Nothing says fall quite like a warm apple cider, and beabadoobee’s “Apple Cider” which captures that cozy, comforting vibe perfectly. Her soothing vocals will lull you into a calm state, making this track ideal for those inevitable pre-exam jitters. It’s a gentle reminder to take a moment for yourself and enjoy the small pleasures of the season.

★ Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels), Jim Croce

This classic folk tune by Jim Croce brings a sense of nostalgia that pairs well with the fall season. The melancholy yet soothing vibe of "Operator" feels like a warm cup of coffee on a crisp morning, making it a perfect addition to your back-to-school playlist. Croce’s storytelling in this song will take you on a reflective journey, ideal for those moments when you need a breather between classes or study sessions.

★ In Bloom, Nirvana

As we transition from the lazy days of summer to the structured routine of fall, Nirvana's "In Bloom" serves as a powerful anthem. The grunge sound of this track contrasts sharply with the carefree vibe of summer, making it a fitting addition as we move into a more serious and introspective season. The raw energy of the song can help to fuel your motivation during those long study sessions. Yes, I will be blasting this song as I walk to class.

★ While My Guitar Gently Weeps, The Beatles

This timeless Beatles track encapsulates the bittersweet nature of the changing seasons. The soulful guitar work and poignant lyrics offer a perfect backdrop for autumn introspection. As the leaves change color and fall to the ground, this song invites you to reflect on the past while preparing for what lies ahead.

★ Whistle For The Choir, The Fratellis

Rounding out the playlist, "Whistle For The Choir" by The Fratellis provides a sweet, melodic tune that's both soothing and uplifting. The whimsical nature of the song evokes the playful spirit of fall, from jumping in leaf piles to cozying up with a good book. It’s the perfect closing track for a playlist that celebrates the end of summer and the beginning of a new chapter.
