In’s and Out’s List: 2024

By Stella Violet

In light of tradition and horror, from my last year’s to Instagram. Here are my open, honest, and opinionated “in’s and out’s” for 2024.

IN: Indie Sleaze Revival

A lot of us, including me, were too young to be a part of the “indie sleaze” era of 2014. And, as time passes, trends resurface. My favorite part about it is the ability for self-expression. Mixing patterns, adding accessories, and shamelessly wearing your makeup from last night is art. Regardless of your feelings about the revival, I am sure you will see this style everywhere. With the main indicator being the Celine FW23 show, shown above, where the entire line revolves around clunky bags, metallic dresses, and oversized sunglasses.

OUT: Y2K Graphic Tees

Please bear with me while I explain myself. I was a victim of the graphic tee trend last year, and while I still believe it can be styled correctly in some cases, let’s try to let it go. I believe it has to do with the large number of different statement tees available.

This trend could have continued, but some of these “statements,” in my opinion, have become tacky. Maybe it is the font or the color, but there comes a point when an overabundance of a trend makes me eventually hate it.

IN: Messy/Bold Eyelooks

A continuation of the “indie sleaze” revival are the messy eyeshadow looks. This can be a bold color smeared across the lids, or a black eyeshadow look thrown together five minutes before a party. I love the idea of looking good without having to put in too much effort and this look is sure to make you the star of any room you walk into. Don’t be afraid to be bold and get creative with silver and gold tones as well, metallics are a staple for this upcoming year as well.

IN: Girl DJs

I have seen an influx of Djs lately and I’m proud to say most of them have been women. Girls know what music to play at parties, and I am glad they are gradually replacing the frat DJs who play the same set at every party.

OUT: Dislike for Mainstream Pop

I am all for broadening my musical horizons, but just because I do not like a particular song or artist does not mean I dismiss those who do. Olivia Rodrigo is my main example; if she is not for you, that is fine! But, if she gets you on a spiritual level, then you shouldn’t feel embarrassed for that. I’m sorry but people can listen to Olivia Rodrigo and Led Zeppelin at the same time, music is subjective and you don’t get a medal for being different. There is a reason why pop music is so popular, ugh.

IN: Dinner Parties

As I get older, I have found a new appreciation for a nice charcuterie/wine night with my closest friends. I want to drink, laugh, and dance, which is something I think we all could use a little more of. Hosting at different friend’s houses once a week or at least once a month is a great way to decompress and enjoy one another. Bonus points if you pull out a record player and take some time away from your phones, except for photos on your digital camera.

IN: Wearing Your Natural Hair

This might be easier said than done, but this year is the year for embracing your curls/natural hair. I’ve fallen victim to straightening my hair every single day, which has led to the demise of my natural curl pattern. Though, I see my cousins, who have the same texture and have taken care of their hair, rock their curls. It’s always something that I think other people can pull off but I hate how I look with my natural hair. This year, I’m hoping to adopt a normal curl routine and to see other girls embrace something that most people pay money to have.

OUT: “Situationships”

It’s hard launch or no launch, I’m so sick of seeing this phrase become normalized. If that man is not willing to give it all up for you, I promise it’s not worth it. I think a good alternative is dating around, going out to dinner with a few different people and really broadening your horizons will set you up for success and less heartbreak. So many people use this phrase as a way to avoid their true feelings which honestly harms both people in the end. It’s also just really embarrassing to have to tell your friends you’re in a “situationship.”

IN: Casual Instagram

Ditch the perfectly curated posts once a month and just post whatever you want, whenever you want. In the end, it doesn’t matter and it’s your own account, post what you want!

OUT: Snapchat

Let’s be honest, we are not 15 anymore, streaks are dead, and people only use snapchat for saved photos. I think private stories are fun for over sharing, but we need to stop normalizing giving men on Hinge our Snapchat accounts. Especially when all I get is a photo of the side of a man’s face with no context.

Honorable Mentions:

OUT:

Skims loungewear as date night outfits, ego driven purchases, slut shaming, military boyfriends, anything high waisted, passive aggressiveness, and airpods.

IN:

Big foreheads, 2012–2014 underground house music, not taking anything too seriously, mixing metals, animal print, butch lesbian house advice, blowouts, and being single.

Please remember, some of these are satirical and nothing is that serious. Be yourself, set some goals, and do whatever makes you happy this year.
