Demi Lovato is in what she calls her happy era—a season of self-discovery, creative freedom, and unapologetically living on her own terms. During her candid conversation with Teen Vogue Editor-in-Chief Versha Sharma at the 2024 Teen Vogue Summit, Lovato opened up about what it means to be in this empowering phase of her career and life.

"I would describe the era of my career today as the whatever makes me happy era," Lovato shared. "I’m making music that makes me happy, I’m cooking in the kitchen, posting those videos on TikTok, I directed the documentary I just did. I’ve spent so many years doing what other people expected of me, but not doing it for myself."

In this new chapter, Lovato is prioritizing what brings her joy—not just in her work, but in the small, everyday moments too. From sharing intimate cooking moments with fans on social media to stepping behind the camera for her directorial debut with Child Star, Lovato is embracing authenticity in every aspect of her life.

The Child Star documentary, which explores the complexities of growing up in the spotlight, was particularly healing for Lovato. "The whole journey was really healing to me, just honoring the journey of the inner child and holding space for my younger self who didn’t get to live a normal childhood," she explained. "Getting to talk to participants of the film and finding that common ground created a sense of community."

But perhaps the most powerful message Lovato shared at the summit was about self-empowerment. "Don’t make yourself smaller to make other people feel more comfortable," Lovato urged. "Don’t be afraid to own your truth." 

For Lovato, art has always been a reflection of her inner world. "I always want to reflect what I’m passionate about through my work," she said. "My music has been something that has served a huge purpose to me, and I would take having an impact on someone’s life over any award any day."

As Lovato moves forward in her career, she’s not only focused on making art that fills her heart but also on the impact it has on her audience. And for fans wondering what’s next, Lovato teased new music on the horizon. "I feel like there’s always new music to be shared," she hinted with a smile. Alongside that, she’s also navigating the joys of planning her upcoming wedding, which adds an exciting personal layer to her flourishing career and happiness.
