A Hot Girl's Guide to 2024 Halloween Costumes
By El Weiss
This one goes out to all of my indecisive girlies.
Are you feeling indecisive (cough cough me) or uninspired this autumn? With Halloween creeping up, it’s time to start thinking about your costume. To ease your stress and guarantee you have a blast, I’ve rounded up a selection of fun (and cute) outfits for your spooky season celebrations.
1. Saltburn
Is it just me, or did we completely forget about Saltburn? Love it or hate it, the film is undeniably iconic. And let’s talk about the 2000s fashion—it’s a total chef’s kiss. You can channel your inner indie sleaze with a Venetia-inspired look: think fringes, heart-shaped sunglasses, and anything Kesha would wear. Alternatively, go ethereal with a Midsummer Night’s Dream vibe based on Oliver’s birthday party—whimsical florals, crowns, and flowing fabrics are your best friends.
2. Lydia Deetz
In honor of the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel, there’s no better time to release your inner Lydia Deetz. If you’re unfamiliar with Beetlejuice, Lydia stumbles upon a portal to the afterlife and gets entangled in a whole lot of supernatural chaos. For the costume, her iconic red wedding dress is a bold choice, but if you’re not feeling the bridal vibes, channel her goth chic with a Tim Burton-inspired all-black ensemble. Don’t forget the signature spiky bangs and messy up-do.
3. Chappell Roan as the Statue of Liberty
I’ve been seeing this one all over TikTok, and I’m obsessed. Chappell Roan’s Statue of Liberty look is everything. To pull this off, you need green, green, and more green- clothes, face paint, everything. Top it off with a crown, and voilà. You’re Lady Liberty herself.
4. Marie Antoinette
This one had a moment last year, but I’m definitely not ready for it to be over. Something about a cutie pair of bloomers or a skirt paired with a corset top just screams royalty. And don’t even get me started on the elegant updos and bows. To top it all off, apply a generous amount of blush for that perfectly regal look.
5. Need Money for Porsche
Lazy gals, this one’s for you. All you need is a white t-shirt and a Sharpie. Write "Need money for Porsche" on it, throw on a pair of jeans, and just like that you’re Brad Pitt. The context behind his infamous shirt remains a mystery, but does it really matter? You’ll still look effortlessly cool.
6. Superbad
For the Superbad fans (like me), here’s your ultimate trio costume.
Fogel (aka McLovin): White button-up, brown vest, and glasses. Don’t forget the legendary McLovin ID for bonus points.
Seth: Blue and white western button-up with plaid pants. Pro tip: Carry a Tide Pod box.
Evan: White collared shirt with a green zip-up. Brown pants work, but a mini skirt gives it a modern twist.
7. Dirty Martini/Coca Cola
Both of these are last-minute-friendly and start with a silver skirt to mimic the glass or can. For the Dirty Martini, wear a top with an olive design and green accessories. Feeling extra? Carry a cocktail glass around all night. For the Coca-Cola look, go with a red corset and, of course, your favorite fizzy drink in hand. Super easy and super chic.
8. Party Animals
Animal print has been super trendy recently so it’s likely you have something with cheetah print laying around. Pair it with a party hat and you’re done. I love a pun based costume.
9. Megara (& Hercules)
Hercules is hands down the best Disney movie. Sorry, not sorry. Megara’s iconic purple dress and gold brooches make for a killer solo or couple’s costume. Just add some attitude to channel Meg’s no-nonsense vibe, and if you’re doing a couple’s look, have your Hercules show up in a simple toga.
10. Miss Sprink and Miss Forcible
Coraline costumes are overdone, but here’s a fresh take: Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, two of the most whimsical characters ever. To capture their theatrical essence, wear colorful leotards (pink or green), and don’t forget the dramatic matching socks. This is perfect for a duo costume.
11. Fantastic Mr. Fox
This Wes Anderson classic makes for the ultimate couple costume. Mr. and Mrs. Fox is simple yet stylish: all you need is a basic outfit and a pair of fox ears. You can also wear a sock on your head (if you know you know).
12. Twiggy
Embrace your inner mod fashion icon with a Twiggy costume. Pair a shift dress with dramatic, exaggerated eyelashes, and don’t forget the bold eyeliner. It’s a retro look that’s always a hit.
13. Fembot
Channel the Austin Powers vibes with a Fembot look. Think big hair, dramatic lashes, and a pink feathery nightgown. This playful look is easily recognizable and gives ultimate cool girl energy.
14. Monster High
For a nostalgic throwback, dress up as one of the Monster High dolls. Each character has a distinct style, so whether you’re feeling goth, preppy, or girly, there’s a doll for everyone. Frankie Stein and Draculaura are my personal favorites.
15. Breakfast at Tiffany's
The timeless look of Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s never goes out of style. All you need is a little black dress, a tiara, and a long cigarette holder. Add pearls for that extra touch of glam. Don’t forget your coffee and croissant!
16. David Bowie
Pay homage to the legend with a David Bowie-inspired costume. Whether it’s his iconic Ziggy Stardust or Aladdin Sane era, the key is bold makeup and statement outfits. If you want to be super on the nose, replicate his iconic lightning bolt.
17. Carrie Bradshaw
Channel your inner NYC fashionista by stepping into Carrie Bradshaw's iconic shoes (literally). Start with a chic tutu skirt-just like in the opening credits of Sex and the City. Pair it with a simple tank top or fitted tee for that effortless-yet-glamorous vibe she pulls off so well. Don’t forget to accessorize with statement heels, a cute clutch, and a Cosmopolitan magazine- and get ready to talk about love, life, and everything in between.
19. Juno (& Paulie)
For an instantly recognizable duo costume, go as Juno and Paulie from Juno. For Juno, wear a striped shirt, a hoodie, and stuff a pillow under your shirt. Paulie’s look is simple: gym shorts, a headband, and sneakers.
