Summer’s Hot, But These New TV Shows Are Hotter: What You Need to Watch This Season

By El Weiss

As Summer officially begins, new shows and seasons are dropped left and right. It’s hard to keep up with, but as a seasoned TV junkie, I’m here to bring you the scoop of what’s worth the watch.

Under the Bridge

Where to Stream: Hulu

My Rating: 5/5

Genre: True Crime

The Gist:

Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s book of the same name, Under the Bridge is the perfect Summer true crime series. The story follows writer Rebecca Godfrey’s journey with external and internal discovery. Shortly after returning to her hometown in British Columbia, she plans to write a book about troubled girls in the area. After encountering three teenagers at a youth home, she discovers that they hold a sinister secret. Godfrey is left with one question. Who is Reena Virk and what happened to her?

My Thoughts:

I was hooked from start to finish. I’m picky with what true crime shows I watch, and I’m so glad I took the chance with Under the Bridge. The show smoothly intertwines the collective grieving of Godfrey and Virk’s parents. We see Godfrey’s judgment and narrator reliability slowly get clouded by ghosts of her past, and how she struggles to overcome her trauma. It will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

Eric

Where to Stream: Netflix

My Rating: 4.5/5

Genre: Drama

The Gist:

What do you get if you combine Sesame Street, NYC in the 80s, and missing children? Eric, of course. Eric follows struggling puppeteer Vincent, as he grapples with the mystery of his runaway son. But, Vincent is convinced he knows how to get his son back. If Vincent can get his son’s creation Eric on his television show Good Day, Sunshine! he will surely come back.

My Thoughts:

Eric doesn’t hesitate to dig deep into NYC’s sinister history. From the AIDS crisis to racial inequality, the show doesn’t hesitate to tackle difficult subjects. I found myself more fascinated by the NYPD detective Michael Ledroit storyline. It’s raw, emotional, and calls out racism and homophobia within the police department.

The Boys Season 4

Where to Stream: Amazon Prime Video

My Rating: 4.5/5

Genre: Action

The Gist: In a world where superheroes are viewed as celebrities and hold as much influence as politicians, it’s no surprise that they inevitably exploit their power. The Boys, a group of men dedicated to taking down superheroes, embark on a journey to take down the powerful organization Vought. In this season, we see two new characters join the Seven (think of the Avengers but evil).

My Thoughts: Without giving any spoilers, this season is pivotal to the development of The Boys. Through loss and grief (more so than in prior seasons), we see characters such as Hughie evolve and become more emotionally intelligent.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

Where to Stream: BBC or Netflix after August 1st

My Rating: 4/5

Genre: Mystery

The Gist:

Pip Fitz-Amobi chooses to investigate the murder of schoolgirl Andie Bell after suspecting that Bell’s boyfriend Sal Singh was wrongly accused of the killing for a school project. How far will she go to uncover the truth?

My Thoughts:

As I hadn’t read the novel, I consulted my friend to inquire about the accuracy of the adaptation. In her opinion, the television show deviated far away from the original plot. She rated the show 7.5/10, similar to my rating of 4/5. The narrative was well executed, perfectly depicted the plot twists, and the videography was vivid and creative.

Geek Girl

Where to Stream: Netflix

My Rating: 3.5

Genre: Drama/YA

The Gist:

Neurodivergent teenager Harriet Manners stumbles into the world of fashion. After being scouted by a model agency on a school trip, her world changes. Between overcoming bullying, falling in love with a famous model, and navigating high school and the fashion industry, Harriet faces it all.

My Thoughts:

I initially decided to watch the show for nostalgia’s sake. If you weren’t aware, Geek Girl is an adaptation of Holly Smale’s 2013 book. The adaptation held true to the novel and received positive press for its accurate depiction of the neurodivergent community. It was a fun watch and perfect for playing in the background while I was writing. If you’re a multitasker like me, you’ll understand what I mean.

As July commences, I can’t wait to see what new media the rest of the season will bring. Well, that’s my way of saying I cannot wait for season 4 of Only Murderers in the Building to come out. Keep your eyes peeled readers; you’ll never know when you’ll find the next big thing.
