The greatest love I’ve known is my deep love for Oaxaca. Oaxaca is a magical place with much to offer, from the food to the music to the fashion. July is an incredibly significant month for Oaxaca; it’s the month of the Guelaguetza, Oaxaca’s biggest and most vibrant celebration. The streets light up in color, music, and joy. The streets overflow with calendas or parades, with dancers in traditional costumes jumping and twirling to the beat of traditional music. Everywhere you turn, people are smiling, laughing, and celebrating the rich culture of their land.
This summer, I have the great opportunity to attend these magical celebrations of culture and ancestry and bring along all of our Gut Instinct readers and culture enthusiasts! This ultimate guide will help you dive headfirst into the heart of this iconic festival, ensuring you experience all the style, sound, and moves that make Guelaguetza a must-see.
Hot Girl History Lesson
Okay, before completely diving into the festival, we must take a mini history lesson. The Guelaguetza takes place every year in July to represent the indigenous people of Oaxaca. The seven regions of the state come together to perform traditional dances paired with narrators telling a story. Each performer is adorned with traditional clothing and jewelry from their respective area.
Our lesson begins with the indigenous tribes of Oaxaca: the Miztec and Zapotec civilizations. They started the Guelaguetza to honor Centeotl, the goddess of corn, hoping and praying for bountiful harvests and good fortune. Dance the Night Away!
One of the hottest highlights of the night has to be the incredible dances. These dances will have your jaws on the floor! Every region showcases its unique style. The Danza de la Pluma, with its intricate feathered headdresses, and the lively Flor de Piña, featuring women in colorful dresses carrying pineapples, are just a few examples. The choreography of Flor de Piña is all about grace and synchronicity. It’s more than just a dance— it’s a statement! The dancers move in unison, their skirts flowing and pineapples held high, creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle. The steps are lively yet elegant, capturing the spirit of joy and community. It's a dance that celebrates femininity, strength, and the beauty of tradition—all while looking absolutely fabulous. The pineapples featured during this dance represent the prosperous agriculture of Tuxtepec, Oaxaca.
Each dance tells a unique and rich story of the indigenous tribes, and each costume is a work of art.
Fashion Galour
Speaking of costumes, each dancer is decked out in high fashion, representing the state's values, beliefs, and traditions. Expect to see beautiful huipiles, elegant rebozos, and incredible accessories. It’s the perfect blend of history and fashion, making each dancer look like they’ve stepped out of a cultural magazine. The Guelaguetza is a runway of traditional Oaxacan fashion.

The region of Valles Centrales in Oaxaca is known for the Chinas Oaxaqueñas, who represent the traditional, stereotypical woman who is hard-working and deep into the Catholic faith. Their fashionable attire reflects their values through the feminine embroidery that their blouses and skirts showcase. They are adorned with jewelry that shows the cross and pieces representing Oaxaca's patron. A common theme and ode to femininity in these women's pieces is the emphasis on flowers. The flowers not only express femininity but symbolize the offerings that the Valles Centrales have for their Patron.
