Girls Just Wanna Have a ‘Brat’ Summer

By Stella Violet

Like most of you, I spent last Thursday refreshing Charli XCX’s highly anticipated ‘Brat’ album until it was released.

Upon my first complete album listen, I was in love. I felt heard as a girl who listens to Lana Del Rey in her airpods wearing last night’s makeup, and is also so confused all the time.

The album’s complexity holds not only meaningful lyrics but a beat you can dance to, making ‘Brat’ the perfect summer motto.

A ‘Brat’ summer is among us and the essentials were laid out on the line in a recent interview Charli XCX did with BBC.

“It can go that way, kind of [like] quite like luxury,” XCX said when referring to her recent post on a yacht.

And, that was when I was glad I said yes to an impulsive trip to Mexico last week, which is what a true Brat summer should be about.

Take that free trip, book that flight and make that five hour drive to a place you’ve been wanting to go to for years.

XCX continued by saying that a Brat summer can also be “trashy.”

“Just like a pack of cigs, and like a BIC lighter, and like a strappy white top with no bra. That’s like kind of all you need,” XCX said.

Trashy is a word I like to hear, you have a flight in a few hours but still want to go clubbing? Best believe, you’re showing up to the airport in heels and smeared lipstick.

Oh? You have $3 to your name? Well, I have $20, let’s go out.

A ‘Brat’ summer is aesthetic-less, it’s putting on a top you found on the floor and teasing your hair in the mirror on the way out the door. It’s about not caring what others think about you and having conversations with strangers.

Play into your inner party girl, and let loose. I’m so sick of everyone saying that going out and having a good time isn’t okay! If you’re able to go to work and pursue your passion projects on the side in the day, you deserve to be trashy and dance on tables in the night.

And, also if you’re already going to be depressed, why not be depressed in a slutty top by the beach?

Charli also said a big part of ‘Brat’ summer includes a boyfriend who is reluctant and frankly “over it.” So, for my single girls, head to the apps and find one that will put up with your 3 a.m. calls from the club for the next three months.

So, grab your airpods and blast your favorite tunes while getting an epic tan. Follow that with a cocktail while you get ready to take on the nearest party, beach and or club.

Everyone is feeling the energy radiate from the bright neon green album cover. But, the real question is, are you going to give in to your inner brat? Or, are you going to be sitting in your dads basement…
