A Rockstar Exit: Dave Grohl’s History of Affairs

By El Weiss

The sweetheart of rock is under fire for fathering a baby. But not with his wife of 20 years.

After the news broke, fan disappointment over Grohl’s affair was unavoidable. Every other video on my For You page was a fan sadly lip synching to “My Hero” or lamenting over a Foo Fighters tattoo they no longer wanted (guys, the rest of the Foos are good). I had a lot of feelings. First “wtf” glazed over me. I mean, when a rock star who is perceived to deviate from others in their positive behavior, it’s natural they will be put on a pedestal. I’m not saying it’s right to treat celebrities like this; humans are imperfect and they make mistakes. I sure as hell do. But can his fans forgive him for cheating? I can’t answer that- as a fan myself, it’s an individual decision.

However, I can report on the facts and serve you Grohl’s problematic relationship history in a nutshell. Whether or not you’ll separate the art from the artist or completely sever ties, here is what you need to know.

Jennifer Leigh Youngblood

In the late 90s, Grohl and Youngblood got married. In 1997, he cheated on her which subsequently ended their marriage. In 2007, he admitted to the claims in an interview with The Guardian. Foo Fighters guitarist and close friend of Youngblood Pat Smear quit the band after the breakup and was rumored to be very upset at Grohl. Supposedly, the pair ended on good terms. A NME article compiling the “wisdom” of Dave Grohl included a great quote summarizing his view on the relationship. “I was 25, my wife was even younger. We weren’t ready to get married. I miss her a tonne, she’s the funniest goddamn weirdo you ever met in your life. Absolutely adorable. It would have been better had we not got married. But you live and you learn.”

Louise Post

The timeline between Grohl and Veruca Salt’s Louise Post is confusing to say the least. The most definitive answer of when they got together is the late 90s. Wonder who inspired “Everlong”? Look no further than Post. The original back track included her vocals during the song’s bridge. She took to Instagram in 2021 posting the original backings and shared, “He later removed it and replaced it with his own whispers, one which was a love letter to me. Maybe I’ll tell the full story...eventually...if I feel like it.” Weird, eh? In 1997, Post accused Grohl of infidelity with Winona Ryder.

Tina Basich

Arguably an unexpected relationship, Basich and Grohl got together following the divorce. Again the exact timeline is unclear. They split after she found out that he was cheating on her. In her 2003 memoir, “Pretty Good for a Girl: The Autobiography of a Snowboarding Pioneer,” she referenced the affair.

She stated, “Breakups suck. But Rockstar exits are the worst.” Grohl broke it off over a five minute phone call and the rest is history.

Jordyn Blum

Time to jump back to the present and talk about Grohl’s current wife. As you’ve likely seen, the two have three children; Violet (2006), Harper (2009), and Ophelia (2014). And of course, his daughter outside of the marriage. In ‘07 he told The Guardian, "Jordyn and Violet are anchors that keep me from completely disappearing." Having divorced parents and a rocky relationship with his father, it’s not a complete surprise he struggles to foster positive relationships. After meeting at a bar, the two started casually dating. Grohl noted that he wasn’t looking for a real relationship at first and broke off contact with the producer for three months. As we know, they got married and shortly after welcomed Violet. This September, he announced he welcomed a daughter outside of the marriage. We do not know the mother as everything has been kept tightly under wraps for everyone’s sake.

We are back at the question of forgiveness. Do we forgive but not forget? Do we ignore the fact that Dave Grohl is in the Fighters and Nirvana? To be honest with you, I am not entirely surprised. Rockstar culture and the infamous rockstar exit are so prevalent in pop culture so it just seems like another incident of normalized infidelity. However, out of anyone, I wish it wasn’t someone who was so looked up to. It’s up to you to follow your gut instinct and decide how you feel.
