15 of the Best Halloween 2024 Costumes That Crossed My Timeline
By Hannah Carapellotti
Fall has always been my favorite season. Seeing the leaves change colors brings me so much joy, I much prefer sweater weather to sweating in short sleeves and there’s no better time to rewatch all of my favorite nostalgic movies and shows. But one of the best parts of fall is when everyone starts posting their Halloween costumes on social media. Whether it’s somebody showing off their handmade costume or accounts dedicated to putting together shopping links to concept pieces, I love seeing all of the creative ideas that everyone comes up with. Now that Halloween has officially passed, I couldn’t resist putting together a list of some of the best costumes that crossed my timeline this year.
BEST GROUP COSTUMES
The hosts of the “Basically Unfiltered” podcast went all out for Halloween this year, with multiple costumes (and of course, tons of content to go with them). But out of their many looks, this one has to be the best. Dressed in The Cheetah Girls’ iconic color-coordinated tracksuits and lip-synching to “Cinderella,” everyone is feeling themselves in their very own music video.
After seeing this video, I want to be a part of user @borundacrystal’s friend group. They could easily wear parts of their costume any time of year, but it’s the little homemade touches, like antlers on a headband or paper flowers on a skirt, that tie everything together. Not only did they nail the execution of their looks, but each person also perfectly captures the Backyardigan they dressed up as.
User @logan_allison_ and his crew also encapsulated the characters they impersonated this Halloween. Watching their video – which they filmed at a nearby church to truly capture the private school vibes – their Derry Girls cosplay is so spot on that they could make a believable fourth season standing in as the cast. In the comment section, they said they’d been dying to bring this idea to life, and they definitely nailed it. So class.
BEST HOMEMADE COSTUMES
I saw a few different people in this costume this year, but user @poppy.anna.x takes the cake. She made the entire costume herself, gluing all the feathers and gems onto a bralette and a pair of shorts. In the tutorial videos on her account, she also showed fans how to make the bird hat out of cardboard — hers turned out exactly like the costume from the movie. To round it all out, she bought LED wings for extra spectacle.
Seeing this look made me realize that not enough people went as Bridgerton characters for Halloween, but honestly nothing could top this look. User @crystalbmari made her Queen Charlotte cosplay herself and posted a series of videos to show it off, from recreating iconic dialogue in costume to getting dressed on camera so viewers could see all of the different pieces. Once it’s all put together, she is stunning and looks exactly like Queen Charlotte in the show’s poster. BRB, if you need me I’ll be rewatching this entire series.
I first came across user @allinanney’s Disney princess look from another video she posted, detailing how she made her Cinderella costume out of an old prom dress. Turning it into a two-piece set, she put her sewing skills to good use this Halloween. In full costume with hair and makeup, she looks so much like the original animated character. The video has over 15 thousand likes, with the behind-the-scenes look having double, and seeing all of her hard work come to life makes this costume so much more special.
BEST CELEBRITY COSTUMES
It shouldn’t surprise me to learn that Josh Gad goes all out for Halloween, but when I first saw this video, I loved it even more after not realizing at first who was on my screen. I’m not alone, either – his comment section was full of other people who didn’t recognize him in costume, and that’s proof of how well done his look is. Staring down the camera, he struts around his house dressed like Dance Moms’ Abby Lee Miller, complete with an ALDC T-shirt and a homemade dance pyramid in his hand.
Amelia DiMoldenberg as Roz from Monsters Inc
The host of Chicken Shop Date looks unrecognizable as Roz, whom she named “the original office siren” in the caption of her video. But as any hot girl knows, that’s the mark of a great costume, and this one is also somehow so on brand for her. I have no idea how she was able to make her hair stand up at a point, which makes this look even more impressive.
This Halloween, Jennifer Garner recreated her iconic makeover scene from 13 Going On 30 in honor of what would be her character’s 20th Halloween. While wearing a recreation of the multicolored dress she donned in the movie, she also included a few funny gags about her age while getting ready, from needing glasses to put on eyeliner to swapping out a thong for shapewear and heels for more supportive sneakers. In truth, though, she hasn’t aged a day, and it’s clear that she was having so much fun dressing up.
BEST NICHE COSTUMES
This one's for the girls – the American girls, that is. User @krisamericangirl’s account is already dedicated to American Girl Doll content, but this year he and two friends dressed up as Samantha, Kit and Molly for Halloween. Their costumes are so spot-on that they look like they could be sold from the official American Girl Doll store, and the trio posted an iconic video dancing to Destiny’s Child that’s racked up 100 thousand likes. I’m definitely stealing this idea next October.
Snoopy fans, rejoice. Joe Cool was a popular costume this Halloween, and it’s not hard to see why. All you need for the base is khakis and a red sweater, but user @doonk69 also nailed the aura of Snoopy’s alter ego. His take garnered almost four million views, and the comment section was so full of people trying to get his attention that his girlfriend chimed in with a video of her own.
This costume is probably the most niche out of this category, but if you get it, you GET it. User @meowronica posted her costume with the caption “no one got it,” but the 80 thousand people who liked her video had her back. Even my stomach plummeted the second I saw it. Paired with a boygenius audio for an extra twist of the knife, this costume is a great way to honor one of the best fall “horror” movies.
BEST COUPLES COSTUMES
The Phantom of the Opera and Christine
As a former theater kid…I’m sat. User @taylagatta and her husband looked stunning as Christine and the Phantom, and the video they made to show off their costumes has over four million views. She put her look together with different pieces she found online and in store, but it looks like something you could buy as a full set, which makes it even more impressive. This is definitely one of the best couples costume ideas I’ve seen ever, not just this year, and I’ll want to recreate with a future partner for sure.
I love when people can make a costume out of a character that isn’t human, but you still know immediately who they’re supposed to be once you see them. That’s definitely the case for user @haydenmiddledwarf and her partner, who dressed as Wall-E and Eve this Halloween. These looks had so many adorable touches to pay homage to the movie, like Christmas lights wrapped around their costumes and a plant in a boot as a prop.
I’ve never seen anybody dress as a painting for Halloween, but now I wish I had come up with it on my own. User @ral_gal and her partner went as “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt, making the costumes themselves by drawing onto a yellow dress and sweater. As they recreated their characters’ poses in her video, you can see a print of the painting behind them to compare their looks to the real thing, and “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer as the song choice ties everything together.
